Small businesses often choose to DIY their payroll and tax processes to save money and survive while on a tight budget. However, by doing this, they increase liability, risk paying hefty fines and ultimately endanger their very existence.

Subscribing to a full-service payroll and tax solution is a great and cost-effective option that helps small businesses stay afloat, avoid liability, and save time on an often tedious aspect of business operation.

However, choosing the right payroll software can be a demanding task. That's why we decided to provide an in-depth analysis of one of the most well-regarded programs in the niche.

After noticing plenty of Patriot Software reviews on the internet but seeing that none of them offers an in-depth overview of its functionalities, we decided to do it ourselves. Read on to see the results.

Now that we’ve seen Patriot Payroll’s pricing plans let's see how each of them works.

As the name implies, the Full Service plan offers many features unavailable in the Basic subscription, including handling federal, state, and local payroll taxes and filing year-end payroll tax reports.  Lastly, the Full Service plan offers a tax filing accuracy guarantee unavailable if you opt for the Basic Payroll package.

Patriot is one of several companies that offer HR software. It is purchasable as an extra feature in the Basic and Full Service Plans. It costs $6 per month plus $2 per employee/contractor. Finally, there is an accounting software service starting at $15 per month.

Patriot Software Features and Overview

The main reasons we love this tool are its ease of use and intuitive design.

A quick learning curve while adopting a new tool is extremely important since it saves time and energy a team can spend on more important tasks. And this is exactly what this software provides.

This payroll software takes care of all tasks related to employee records creation. It helps define employee deductions and contributions and speeds up the payroll process significantly. It also automatically submits payroll taxes which is something anyone who’s ever done business taxes will appreciate.

Patriot Software Full Service payroll can be customized to manage the employees’ work hours and the types of payments they'll receive.

Furthermore, it offers the customization of employee benefits packages and allows employers to assign different types of benefits to each employee. This is extremely important for more diverse and flexible teams that often need custom-made solutions.

This software offers the possibility to create a wide variety of reports (standard accounting reports included) which saves a lot of time and energy.

What we love about Patriot software is that it's accessible and not dependent on any operating system. To log into the account, users just need a secure internet connection and a browser - nothing else!

Patriot Software Review: Who Is It For?

Patriot Software is best for small businesses and nonprofits that handle up to 100 employees. Its affordable price makes it more attractive compared to its competitors, even for the Full Service Payroll Plan.

Both Patriot Software plans come with essential payroll features such as direct deposit and W-2s, with a possibility of purchasing HR and Time Attendance add-ons.

Its most significant benefit is that the software is based entirely online, and users can check their information on any device as long as they have access to the internet.

To summarize, Patriot Software is a payroll software for small businesses and nonprofits, and companies that require a straightforward solution that gets the job done.

However, companies with more than 100 employees that run outside of the US won't find this software solution helpful. Additionally, companies in need of a more robust HR solution shouldn't consider subscribing to any of Patriot Software's pricing plans and should look into software such as Zenefits instead.

Patriot Software Integrations

At the moment, Patriot Software integrations include the following:

  • QuickBooks Time. QuickBooks Time is one of the best time tracking software packages you’ll find in the market. QuickBooks Time seamlessly integrates with Patriot software, allowing employees to track their time anywhere and on almost any device, from desktops and laptops to phones and tablets. This time-tracking tool provides business owners with precise information on how much employees worked, their locations, notes, PTO, and vacation and holiday hours, which later saves a lot of time and effort when running payroll.
  • QuickBooks Online Advanced. QuickBooks Online Advanced is another handy tool that seamlessly integrates with Patriot Software. This tool allows users to track inventory, view outbound, and inbound sales, manage distribution, track KPIs, and more.
  • GoCo. GoCo is a handy integration for Patriot Software that helps in simplifying HR processes by automating hiring and aiding onboarding processes. All HR data is synced with payroll and benefits, which is a convenient feature.
  • TimeWorksPlus. TimeWorksPlus is an attendance and time-tracking integration that ensures that payments are aligned with the actual hours worked. Furthermore, by using this integration, employers can automate PTOs and control overtime.

Patriot Software vs QuickBooks

Having described what this tool can do, let’s talk about Patriot Payroll alternatives. While there are a lot of competitors around (free payroll software solutions included), let’s talk about the elephant in the room - Intuit Quickbooks.

The biggest benefit of Quickbooks compared to Patriot software is that it comes with a freemium version. Although both solutions offer a free trial period, you may need more than 30 days to decide whether a software solution of this type is a good fit or not.

Furthermore, Patriot software is best for companies that employ up to 200 workers, while the Quickbooks solution can handle more than 1,000 employees. That said, Patriot software is generally better for smaller businesses, while Quickbooks scales better for larger enterprises.

Both solutions offer the expense tracking feature along with billing and invoicing and bank reconciliation features. However, compared to QuickBooks, we can say Patriot Payroll features are a bit lacking in areas such as project and fund accounting. That said, Quickbooks is a more robust solution aimed at larger-sized businesses, so that’s to be expected.

Bottom Line

Patriot Software is a great tool for small to medium-sized businesses since it covers the most important areas concerning payroll and tax management. Its user-friendly interface and accessibility make it a favorite of many companies worldwide. Patriot Accounting Software reviews almost universally agree on one thing, and we can only add our two cents along the same lines: this is a fantastic and affordable software for small businesses and startups. It’s not perfect, nor is it well-suited to larger companies, but it doesn’t need to be.

Is Patriot software good?

The most accurate answer would be - that depends on your needs. If you’re a business owner with a do-it-yourself attitude that needs a simple and efficient payroll solution, then Patriot software is an excellent choice. However, if you’re looking for a robust HR and payroll solution that will handle most of your business operations, there are better options out there.

How much does Patriot software cost?

Besides the 30-day free trial version, Patriot Payroll for small businesses has two pricing plans: Basic costs $10 per month plus $4 per employee or contractor, while Full Service Payroll will set you back $30 plus the same additional employee/contractor costs. You can read more about these plans in our review above. You can also buy Patriot’s time tracking and HR software both on Basic and Full Service plans for $6 per month plus $2 per employee/contractor. Furthermore, Patriot software offers an accounting software service which starts at $15 per month.

Does Patriot software have an app?

Patriot Tax Software doesn’t have an app. However, its website is highly responsive and mobile-optimized. If you want to use the software on your mobile device, you’ll just need to access it through your browser.

What is full-service payroll?

When we say full-service payroll, we usually mean outsourced companies that manage payroll for small businesses. They are most commonly responsible for payroll processing, direct depositing, tax filing, and payment processes.

We usually compare a full-service payroll with an in-house payroll. In-house payroll refers to an internal department handling the payroll and tax processing. Hiring full-time employees that will do payroll and tax in-house is often impossible to afford for small businesses, which is why they frequently reach out toward payroll and tax software.

Who is Patriot Payroll for?

Patriot software reviews and automates a lot of information regarding employee payroll, working hours, and so on, but it lacks some advanced HR and payroll features and isn’t well suited to very large teams. As such, it is best when used by small businesses and startups.
